Blessed Hope Orphanage & Academy is located in Bulamu, Uganda, Africa. Bulamu is approximately 20 miles outside of Kampala in the countryside. This location is not only safe, but it is beautiful. The orphanage sits on approximately 23 acres of land. The location provides an excellent opportunity for the orphans to learn about agriculture. They are learning about growing food and caring for animals. At present, the children are growing sweet potatoes, casava (a root vegetable), and matooke (green bananas). The children learn how to plant, care for, and cultivate them. They eat these items in their daily meals. There are several animals on the compound. There are 15 cows at the orphanage. Until these cows were purchased, the children had no milk. Now they enjoy milk every day. There are also several goats on site. The children tend to them, making sure they have the grass they need to eat and plenty of water. Goat meat is part of the average diet in Uganda. There are 52 pigs at the academy. The children learn how to care for them, feed them, and then sell them. The funds they generate from the sale of pigs go to the needs of the academy. Chickens have also been purchased. There are approximately 115 chickens there. Chicken is the most expensive meat in Uganda and is served to welcome guests into their homes. There is a full time animal caretaker at the orphanage, Isaac. He oversees the feeding and care of the animals and allows the children to assist as needed. More animals are needed at the Academy—especially chickens, cows and goats. If you feel like you are able to help in this area, please see our List of Immediate Needs page.
